That's an unfinished object in the knitting/quilting world. It's something you've set aside for more than a year, that frankly has a slim chance of ever getting completed.
The first is a sock that was started about 10 years ago... It's 80% done, but then there's the issue of the other sock! The back has a pretty lace pattern, it's called a walk-away sock. Started on a vacation and then pretty much abandoned it. Must have been about the time I stopped knitting so much (about 8 years ago?). For the record I have finished one pair of adult socks (great pattern from knitnet - herringbone - no longer free). And probably gifted about 10 pairs of baby socks.
The second is actually finished, but it's suffering from the same pair problem. This one is a made with a very soft, light gray alpaca. I created the pattern, scribbled on the back of a napkin, while on a plane to Mexico. In the 10 years that have passed, I have not started the second glove and lost the napkin.
(The Mexico trip was kayaking with Mar y Aventuras which I would do again in a heartbeat. They're pretty reasonable - anyone want to come with me? The highlight was swimming with wild sea lions! And they take care of you by making meals, bringing tents, driving and ferrying you everywhere, etc. It's not really roughing it.)
